Who is God… to You?

The New Year is upon us and resolutions abound.  Our resolutions are new promises of how we intend to live our lives from now forward.  However, more than a time of new beginnings, or forward-looking, this is a time of reflections.  For our country, 2001 was an enormously difficult year.  The way we think about our lives has been changed forever.  We honestly don’t know what this coming year will bring, so making mundane promises just tends to lose its importance in the big picture.

What is your “big picture”? Where does God firmly fit in the midst of it? Is He the picture, or a small part of it?  We have defined a mission statement for this ministry as “Telling God who He is… to us”.  This statement is full of implications.  For one, it implies that you know God.  Jesus taught us the first and greatest commandment for a child of God is to love the Lord with all of your heart, soul, and mind.  Jesus further tells us in John 4:24 that the Father is looking for true worshippers.  One of the definitions of worship is “to give worth to someone or something”.  So then, true worship of God would be to apply the highest worth to Him.  There is nothing or no one else above Him in your life. How can we do this?  How can we truly love God if we don’t know who He is? Knowing God becomes imperative for true worship.  We know God through reading His Word and building a relationship with Him.  If you want your worship to be true, get to KNOW God.

The second implication is that you are speaking to God.  Ephesians chapter 6 teaches us about the Spiritual armor of God.  The one piece of offensive weaponry in this list is sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.  The language of the text implies the “spoken” Word o fGod.  Now we see the importance of songs based on Scripture.  As we sing them, we are speaking the Word of God and utilizing its power in spiritual warfare.  It is also important to speak words of love and adoration to God as we worship Him. SPEAK words of worship to the God that you KNOW.

The final implication is the one that I love most. “Telling God who He is.. TO US”, makes it personal.  The Bible is filled with passages telling us to sing a new song to Him.  Jesus said that you couldn’t put new wine in old wineskins.  God’s mercies are new every morning, thus giving us something new and powerful to sing about everyday.  A passage that I love and that has been a foundation for my ministry is Psalm 33:3 which says “Sing to Him a new song, play skillfully and shout for joy.” There it is! God wants new, good, happy songs from His children.  I grew up singing many of the old favorites, and I still love them today.  However, God wants to speak through you today as a songwriter.  He wants to speak His timeless message to His Body with words that have meaning for them today. SPEAK PERSONAL words of worship to the God that you KNOW.

The tragic events of September 11, 2001brought about some of the most beautiful aspects of mankind as a response.  Sharing, self-sacrifice, love, hope, faith.  Many songs were inspired, I’m certain.  Many of us put the fragile nature of our lives in perspective.  Many of us remembered that even in the midst of loss and tragedy, God is still holy. He’s still worthy of praise and adoration.  One of the most stunning things is in the book of Job, chapter 1. After Job received news of death of his children, the loss of his home, the loss of all of his possessions, and even the loss of his own health, instead of shaking an angry fist at God, Job fell down, and worshipped.

Chance Glenn Worship Ministries is about the mission of bringing glory to Jesus through original praise and worship. Psalm 33:3 says "Sing to Him a new song, play skillfully and shout for joy". We write, produce, promote, and perform new worship for the Body of Christ. This ministry is here as a resource for worship leaders and churches.

The Morningbird Worship Network is established to connect worship leaders, songwriters, church creative arts ministers, and musicians. Worship Perspectives is a monthly publication of the network. Find out how to join us today by visiting www.chanceglenn.org , or call toll free at 1-877-889-6921.
